چکیده
This article analyzes modulated phases in liquid crystals, from the long-established cholesteric and blue to recently discovered twist-bend, splay-bend, splay nematic phases, as well twist-grain-boundary (TGB) helical nanofilament variations on smectic phases. The analysis uses concept of four fundamental modes director deformation: twist, bend, splay, a fourth mode related saddle-splay. Each is coupled specific type molecular order: chirality, polarization perpendicular parallel director, octupolar order. When crystal develops one spontaneous order, ideal local structure becomes nonuniform, with corresponding deformation. In general, frustrated; it cannot fill space. As result, must form complex global phase, which may have combination deformation modes, periodic array defects. Thus, an under geometric frustration provides unified framework understand wide variety

Frustration in Modulated Phases : Ripples and Boojums
Many exotic modulated phases can be described in terms of regular array of defects. We have studied frustrated continuum elastic theories for several such liquid crystalline systems. While in each case the nature of the modulation and the defects is quite different, we note striking similarities in the structure of the free energies. In each case, frustration arises from the local packing prope...
متن کاملElectroclinic effect and modulated phases in smectic liquid crystals.
We explore the possibility that the unusually large electroclinic effect observed in the smectic-A phase of a ferroelectric liquid crystal arises from the presence of an ordered array of disclination lines and walls in a smectic-C* phase. If the spacing of these defects is in the subvisible range, this modulated smectic-C* phase would be similar macroscopically to a smectic-A phase. The applica...
متن کاملOrder and Frustration in Chiral Liquid Crystals
This paper reviews the complex ordered structures induced by chirality in liquid crystals. In general, chirality favors a twist in the orientation of liquidcrystal molecules. In some cases, as in the cholesteric phase, this favored twist can be achieved without any defects. More often, the favored twist competes with applied electric or magnetic fields or with geometric constraints, leading to ...
متن کاملMesoscale Polarization by Geometric Frustration in Columnar Supramolecular Crystals
Columnar supramolecular phases with polarization along the columnar axis have potential for the development of ultrahigh-density memories as every single column might function as a memory element. By investigating structure and disorder for four columnar benzene-1,3,5-trisamides by total X-ray scattering and DFT calculations, we demonstrate that the column orientation, and thus the columnar dip...
متن کاملphases of liquid crystals and their transitions
A brief introduction of liquid crystals and their phases is provided in this paper. Liquid crystal is a state of matter which has intermediate prosperities between liquid and crystalline solid. Its phases are characterized by their space and point group symmetry. We'll give a description of the symmetry and characteristics of different phase types of liquid crystals. And then talk about their p...
